Power BI Dashboards for Business Central in Singapore

Beyond the Built-In Reports

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central comes with Power BI content built in, and it's a reasonable place to start. It's also generic by design — it doesn't know your dimensions, your chart of accounts, or the numbers your board actually asks for. We build the layer that does.

Do You Even Need This? Business Central Already Has Standard Reports

Sometimes you don't. If you're running standard processes on a standard chart of accounts and the built-in reports answer your questions, use them. They're free and they work.

Where they run out is specific and predictable. The built-in content is designed to work for every Business Central customer, which means it can't be designed for yours.

01

It doesn't know your dimensions.

Business Central's dimensions are the whole point — they're how your business is actually structured. The standard reports treat them generically, so the analysis you care about most is the analysis they handle worst.
02

It stops at Business Central's edge.

The moment a question spans Business Central and something else — your CRM, an operational system, a spreadsheet finance maintains — the built-in reports can't answer it. A proper model can.
03

Customising it isn't quicker than building it.

Teams usually try to bend the standard content first. Past a certain point you've spent longer adapting a generic model than it would have taken to build one that fits.

What's in the Five Dashboards

Five finance views, not five generic templates — each built to your chart of accounts and reading from the same model, so the numbers reconcile. Click through to see what each one covers.

01

Financial Performance

P&L against budget, sliced by your dimensions — department, project, location, however you've set them up — with drill-through to the entries behind any figure.

Getting the Data Across

Business CentralBusiness Central
Power BIPower BI

Business Central sits in the Microsoft stack, so the connection is the straightforward part. We set it up as either an API connection or a scheduled extract, depending on how current your numbers need to be and how your IT team prefers to work.

The modelling is what takes the time and it's what determines whether the dashboards still work in a year. We do that first and build on top of it, rather than the other way round.

If Connecting Is Easy, What Are We Paying For?

01

Dimension modelling

Mapping how you actually use Business Central's dimensions, so analysis by department or project works properly instead of approximately.

02

Chart of accounts logic

Your groupings, your subtotals, your reporting hierarchy, not a generic set.

03

Bringing in what isn't in Business Central

The systems and spreadsheets that hold half the answer.

04

Making it survive change

A model that doesn't break when someone adds a dimension value next quarter.

Business Central and Power BI: Common Questions

Business Central already includes Power BI reports. Why build more?
The built-in content is generic by necessity — it's designed to work for every customer. It handles standard reporting well and struggles with anything shaped like your business specifically, particularly dimension-based analysis.
Can you build on the standard content rather than starting fresh?
Sometimes, and we'll say so if that's the sensible route. It depends how far your requirements sit from the standard model. We look at that during scoping rather than assuming.
Do we need extra licences?
Power BI licensing is separate from Business Central. If you're not set up yet we'll advise on what's needed and configure the workspace as part of the build.
Can this include data from outside Business Central?
Yes, and it's usually where most of the value sits. Combining Business Central with CRM, operations, or the spreadsheets finance maintains is a common part of the brief.
Who owns the dashboards?
You do — built in your workspace, under your licences. Nothing switches off if you stop working with us.
Will this work with our dimensions?
That's the core of the build. We map how you actually use dimensions rather than assuming a standard structure, because that's usually where the standard reports fall down.
Are there grants available in Singapore?
Singapore businesses have several support schemes for digital and analytics projects. See our grants page for current criteria.
